When prepping your beds for Spring, first you need to trim your shrubs. When you trim, take no more than 1/3 off of the shrubs and you only need to trim in fall through spring.
Next you should put an edge down, either by using a bed-edger or a shovel. This helps define the beds and keeps the mulch in place. If you have weeds, spray them with a weed killer. Then we recommend installing landscaping fabric, or we have found used newspaper works just as well. When mulching new beds, you need four inches of mulch, however when remulching you only need two-three inches. We prefer hardwood mulches (brown, black and pine bark), but there are gravels and pine straw, so it is your choice! Use what you like, not what someone else chooses for you. If you have any landscaping questions email us or give us a call and we will be glad to help you out.
